What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the area of dentistry where the focus is on correcting crooked teeth and other causes of Malocclusion, which refers to the misalignment of teeth and the affect it has on your bite. Problems that can be diagnosed, fixed and prevented by orthodontics include problematic gaps between teeth and overcrowding. With modern technology and a team of skilled dentists on hand, we can straighten up your teeth and realign them correctly.

When should you have Orthodontics?

While teeth straightening tends to be taken care of earlier on in a patient’s life as teenagers, orthodontic treatment is available at any time during adulthood. Adults tend to be put off by the idea of wearing braces but these days their options are more open and include invisalign invisible braces, which are discreet and effectively straigthen teeth without people even noticing they are there.

Choosing your clinician

Of course, orthodontic surgery cannot be performed by just anyone and only a specially trained specialist with years of experience behind them should be consulted for such treatment. Fortunately our clinicians have undergone several years of extensive training and are fully qualified to help you. Orthodontic treatment is a simple but delicate procedure that requires precision and patience and in some cases it can take up to eighteen months to complete, which is why you should always make sure any practitioner you choose is a skilled professional.

The Process

The first stage of any kind of treatment will always be a thorough discussion between you and your dentist, who will inform you of all your options and help you decide what would be best for you. There will also be an orthodontic examination that may include x-rays if needed, in order to assess your dental health and help make a decision. You will be able to have any questions answered during this time to help put you at ease and make your mind up about which treatment might benefit you the most.

What is the right solution for me?

There is a wide range of modern orthodontic methods and we are proud to be able to offer them all to our patients. Whether you choose fixed braces or invisible braces or opt for one of our alternative treatments, we will work with you to ensure you get the treatment that works for you.

Fixed Braces

Fixed braces straighten your teeth by applying gradual pressure to them over time. They are also known as train tracks and are attached to your teeth permanently, until they have been sufficiently straightened. Whether total or partial, braces are made up of brackets, which are attached to your teeth with a strong adhesive, with arches connecting them. These arches are what slowly pull them together to realign your teeth and will need to be readjusted occasionally. You can choose from metal braces or tooth-coloured ceramic braces that blend in. Another variation is a newer type called lingual braces, which work in much the same way but with the added benefit of the brackets being tucked away on the back of your teeth instead.
